up in blue

1. Early one morning the sun was shining I was laying
in bed,
G F C
wondering
if she'd changed at all, if her hair was still red.
G F G F
Her folks, they said our lives
together, sure was gonna be rough,
G F
they
never did like mama's homemade dress.
C
Papa's bank book wasn't big enough,
D Em G C
and I
was standing on the side of the road, rain falling on my shoes,
D Em
heading
out for the East coast,
G C D
Lord knows, I've paid some
dues getting through,

2. She was married when we first met, soon to be divorced,
G F C
I helped her out of a jam, I
guess, but I used a little too much force.
G F G F
We drove that car as far as we
could abandoned it out West,
G F C
split
up on a dark sad night, both agreeing it was best.
D Em
G C
She turned around to look at
me as I was walking away,
D Em
I heard her say over my
shoulder,
G C D
"We'll meet again someday
on the avenue",

3. I had a job in the great north woods working as a cook for a spell,
G F C
but I
never did like it all that much, and one day the axe just fell.
G F
So I drifted down to
G F
where
I was lucky enough to be employed,
G F C
working
for a while on a fishing boat right outside of Delacroix.
D Em G C
But all the while I was alone, the past was close behind,
D Em G C D
I seen a lot of women, but she
never escaped my mind, and I just grew,

4. She was working in a topless place, and I stopped in for a beer,
G F C
I just kept looking at the side
of her face in the spotlight so clear.
G F G F
Later on when the crowd
thinned out, I was just about to do the same,
G F
She was standing there in back
of my chair,
C
sayin', "Tell me, don't I know your name?"
D Em
I muttered something
underneath my breath,
G C
she
studied the lines on my face,
D Em
I must admit I felt a little
uneasy
G C D
when
she bent down to tie the laces of my shoes,

5. She lit a burner on the stove and offered me a pipe,
G F C
"I thought you'd never say
hello," she said, "You look like the silent type."
G F G F
And then she opened up a book
of poems and handed it to me,
G F C
written
by an Italian poet from the 13th century.
D Em G C
And every one of them words
rang true and glowed like burning coals,
D Em G C D
pouring
off of every page like it was written in my soul from me to you,

6. I lived with them on
G
F C
there
was music in the cafés at night and revolution in the air.
G F
And then he started into
dealing with slaves,
G
F
and
something inside of him died,
G F C
she
had to sell everything she owned and froze up inside.
D Em G C
And when one day the bottom
fell out, I became withdrawn,
D Em
the
only thing I knew how to do
G C D
was
to keep on keepin' on like a bird that flew,

8. So now I'm going back again, I got to get to her somehow,
G F C
all
the people we used to know they're an illusion to me now.
G F G F
Some are mathematicians,
some are carpenter's wives,
G F
don't
know how it all got started,
C
I don't know what they're
doing with their lives.
D
Em G C
Me, I'm still on the road
headed for another joint,
D Em
we
always did feel the same,
G C D
we just
saw it from a different point of view,
