Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer
Dm
1. Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer,
we're a notorious couple of cats.
C
as
knockabout clowns, quick change comedians,
G
tightrope
walkers and acrobats.
Dm
We have an extensive reputation,
we make
our home in Victoria Grove.
C
This is merely our centre of
operation,
G Dm
for
we are incurably given to rove.
Dm
(2.) We are very well-known in Cornwall Gardens,
in
Launceston Place and in Kensington Square.
C
We have really a little more
reputation
A7 Dm
than
a couple of cats can very well bear.
Dm
3. If the area window is found ajar,
and
the basement looks like a field of war,
C
if a
tile or two comes loose on the roof,
G
which
presently fails to be waterproof.
Dm
If the drawers are pulled out
from bedroom chests,
and
you can't find one of your winter vests,
C
if
after supper one of the girls,
G
suddenly
misses her Woolworth pearls :
F Dm
The family will say: “It's
that horrible cat!
Dm A Dm A
Was it Mungojerrie
or Rumpelteazer ?”
A7 Dm
And most of the time they
leave it at that.

Dm
4. Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer
have a very unusual gift of the gab.
C
we
are highly efficient catburglars as well
G
and
remarkably smart at a smash and grab.
Dm
We make our home in Victoria
Grove,
we
have no regular occupation.
C
we
are plausible fellows, and like to engage
A7 Dm
a
friendly policemen in conversation.
Dm
5. When the family assembles for Sunday dinner
with
their minds made up that they won't get thinner
C
on
Argentine joint, potatoes and greens,
G
and
the cook would appear from behind the scenes.
Dm
And say in a voice that is
broken with sorrow :
”I'm afraid you must wait and
have dinner tomorrow !
C
For the joint has gone from
the oven, like that!”
F
Dm
The family will say: “It's
that horrible cat !
Dm A Dm A
Was it Mungojerrie
or Rumpelteazer ?”
A7 Dm
And most of the time they
leave it at that.
(orig. moves up half a note
to capo 1st here)
Dm
6. Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer
have
a wonderful way of working together,
C
and some
of the time you would say it was luck,
G
and
some of the time you would say it was weather.
Dm
We go through the house like a
hurricane,
and
no sober person could take his oath.
C
Was it Mungojerrie
or Rumpelteazer ?
A7
Or could you have sworn that
it might have been both ?
Dm
And when you hear a dining-room
smash,
or up
from the pantry there comes a loud crash,
C
or
down from the library there comes a loud ping
G
from
a vase which is commonly said to be Ming.
F Dm
Then the family will say: “Now
which is which cat ?
Dm A Dm A
It was Mungojerrie
and Rumpelteazer!”
A7
Dm
And there's nothing at all to
be done about that !
